Towards a Computational Account of Reflexive Consciousness

چکیده

This paper offers a preliminary sketch for an account of reflexive consciousness based on an implemented architecture that combines a global workspace architecture with an internally closed sensorimotor loop. The proposed account extends the theoretical framework of the already implemented architecture with to two concepts that structure the flow of consciously processed information. First, contextual switches divide the unfolding contents of consciousness into a set of nested episodes, wherein one conscious episode can “refer to” another. Second, the imposition of a focus / fringe structure enables consciousness to encompass material that is merely available to it but not actually present. This combination of reflexivity and fringe may underpin our awareness of our own existence as conscious beings.

Naturalizing Self-Consciousness

The crucial problem of self-consciousness is how to account for knowing self-reference without launching into a regress or without presupposing self-consciousness rather than accounting for it (circle). In the literature we find two bottom-up proposals for solving the traditional problem: the postulation of nonconceptual forms of self-consciousness and the postulation of a pre-reflexive form of...

Implementation of Long-distance Reflexives in Korean : A Categorial Grammar Approach

This paper provides computational algorithms for a Korean reflexive caki, for which both sentence-bound and long-distance readings are possible. Its analyses are based on Chierichia's theory in Categorial Grammar, and a CCG-like system is introduced for the implementation. In this system, we can get both readings of caki with the same resolution mechanisms, while the difference is where the ref...

In this paper, we present an account of phenomenal consciousness. Phenomenal consciousness is experience, and the problem of phenomenal consciousness is to explain how physical processes – behavioral, neural, computational – can produce experience. Numerous thinkers have argued that phenomenal consciousness cannot be explained in functional, neural or information processing terms (e. Different ...
